Discover Anopolis

Welcome to Anopolis, a hidden gem in Sfakia! Anopolis is one of the picturesque villages of the Sfakia region, nestled at the foothills of the White Mountains in the prefecture of Chania, Crete.

The journey to Anopolis is an experience in itself. Following the road west from the seaside village of Chora Sfakion, the route ascends a dramatic, steep mountainside, eventually bringing you to the village, which is perched 600 metres above sea level.

Our apartments are conveniently located 300 metres after the first house of the village, on the right-hand side. A little further ahead, you'll reach the village square, a perfect spot to pause and take in the charm of Anopolis.

In the square, you'll notice the statue of Ioannis Daskalogiannis, a local hero and leader of the 1770 revolution against the Ottoman conquerors. His real name was Ioannis Vlachos, but he earned the nickname "Daskalogiannis" — meaning "Teacher John" — because he was regarded as the teacher and leader of the Sfakians.

Outside of festive days, Anopolis offers a peaceful and authentic atmosphere. The village is sparsely populated, consisting of nine neighbourhoods spread across the plateau. The locals primarily engage in farming, beekeeping, and agriculture, producing high-quality dairy products, honey, and raki.
